We strongly recommend traveling
by road. You see the countryside, pass through villages and
bazaars and can stop if you find something interesting. Some
roads are not as good as others but the drive is always
worthwhile. Our drivers are familiar with local conditions and
are trained to drive safely.
Road travel is by coach or car. The car used is generally the
spacious Ambassador seating three plus the driver comfortably.
It is a sturdy vehicle, ideal for local roads. Some newer saloon
cars are now also being used, such as Maruti Esteem and Ford
Icon. For parties of 3 or 4 we use a bigger vehicle, called the
Toyota Qualis, which can seat five plus the driver. The coaches
used normally have 12 or 18 comfortable reclining seats. For
larger groups a bigger coach with 35 seats is used. We try to
keep some empty seats in a coach to allow mobility and give you
more space.
For our published tours we use air-conditioned transport in
the warmer season, typically from mid-March to mid-October,
except in the hills where air-conditioning is not required. Even
during the winter months there is provision for air-conditioning
in the vehicles, which is switched on if required. In some
remote places such as game reserves air-conditioned transport
may not be available. Our view is that one gets a better "feel"
of the country in a non air-conditioned transport, but this may
not be a good idea if you are allergic to dust. For tailor-made
holidays air-conditioning is available on request at a
supplementary charge.
